week 36 - May 14-18
I first want to thank each of you for the fabulous gifts and treasures that were showered upon me last week! Two weeks in a row of being absolutely spoiled – I could get used to that! Haha! I am simply speechless and humbled by your overwhelming generosity. I am so grateful to you all for your support and for sharing your precious children with me this year. I love these sweet kiddos dearly and have so enjoyed watching them grow and learn this year! But, hey……we’re not done yet……
Important Dates and Reminders:
THANK you for helping your child remember to return his/her library book. The BLUE class has 100% returned and we are only waiting on 1 book from GREEN. Great job!
Thursday, May 17th – Volunteer Reception in the library immediately following Morning Assembly. All of you, in one form or another, have volunteered this year to make our class a better place! You are all invited to our school wide celebration of…you! Hope you can make it! More info here: http://evite.me/YTMGgBVArE
Friday, May 18th – MAY MADNESS- Take 2!!! 8:45 am – 11:00 am!! “Dress code” for all students is cool & comfortable shorts and shirts. Be sure to slather on sunscreen at home Friday morning. All students should have on old tennis shoes, no crocs or flip flops – they will be running A LOT and may get wet and muddy! We will be eating in the cafeteria, but just a bit later than usual. We will also go to specials and have recess in the afternoon. You may want to send a change of clothes for after the Madness. Jammies are fine – they will be exhausted, so we will have a somewhat low-key afternoon with the exception of specials and recess.

-comprehension skills – main idea, sequencing and retelling
-High frequency words: reviewing all
-writing, writing, writing
-magic “e”
-end of year reading assessments
I have started end of the year reading assessments which will take a couple of weeks to complete. I will not be meeting as regularly with our reading groups, but your child will be bringing home the book bag this week and next. Many times they will be choosing their own books from choices at or near their current reading level, so you may find the books to be too hard or too easy. You may notice some of these books will be quite a bit more difficult than the reading group books since there is no controlled vocabulary. It is good practice in applying the reading strategies we have been working on (picture power, sound power, snap word power, start the word, look for “chunks” you know, context clues - does it make sense?, etc). Please keep reading with your child for 10 minutes each night. They are doing GREAT! I will share the assessment results with you before the end of the year.

I would like for them to read this book to you at least once to practice and build fluency. If no new book is listed, just have them read any book(s) from their bag. Disclaimer: Kindergarten “homework” is reading ANYTHING for 10 minutes per day (bedtime stories read by mom and dad count). Book bags are simply great practice for reading books on our “just right” level, and reading group books give us a bit of a challenge to keep pushing us along. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. ALL of our readers are making great progress! As always - No stress allowed! :)

Week 25 - February 19-23
We have survived STEAM Day, the 100th Day, our first field trip, Valentine’s Day, Bingo Night and the SMART tag launch! Whew! What a busy month it has been! This week we are looking forward to getting back to “normal.” I cannot thank you all enough for the treats and goodies you showered upon me last week! I think I was able to match most gifts to the givers, but please know how much I appreciate all the sweets from my “sweets!” A huge THANK YOU for your generous gift - I will definitely look forward to some shopping and spa time over Spring Break!
I want you all to know how much I appreciate all of your kind words and support throughout the Westlake Chamber of Commerce experience. I am beyond humbled and truly honored to have been nominated and to be surrounded by such talented, dedicated, passionate members of an amazing community. Wow – your generosity and support never cease to amaze me!!
Important Dates and Reminders:
Open House Friday, February 23rd! Drop by between 7:30 and 8:45 to catch a glimpse of what we do each day. Your child will be your guide and will happily show you around the classroom as well as other areas of school. Be sure to pick up an Open House checklist when you get to the classroom. Open House is "come and go," so feel free to sleep in a bit if you wish. There will be no morning assembly. Our actual school day will begin at 8:45. Hope you can make it!
Wednesday, March 7th – Kite Day for our class during PE (11:45-12:35). The Booster Club has purchased kites for every student and our 5th grade helpers will be putting them together for us. You are welcome to join your child on the soccer field for kite flying fun.
Kite Day Info from the PE Teachers:
Parents are invited to come and fly kites with their child, but are asked not to bring younger siblings! Please park in front of the school (in designated parking spaces) or at Riverbend (not by the field in order to reduce traffic). You can meet your child out on the field, we will bring them outside after some brief instructions. Please take your child’s kite home with you after we are done flying!
Kites will be distributed to your child’s class before their Kite Day. Students will use these kites only, please do not bring other kites from home! The teachers (along with their classroom buddies for the younger grades) will help put together the kites. They will be ready to go for kite day!
We hope that the weather cooperates, but if kite flying is not possible during a class we will play games in the gym instead. Please do not call the office to see if kite day has been cancelled! Kite days will not be rescheduled.
You can get ready for kite flying by attending the Zilker Kite Festival on Sunday, March 4th. For more information go to https://www.abckitefestival.org/
Students may only attend the kite day for their PE class. Please do not ask to participate with another group due to your child's absence on their assigned kite day.

Do not spend more than 10 minutes on the reading assignment (unless of course your child wants to and you have the time). The books your child will be bringing home are to help build reading strategies, comprehension and fluency. Please help your child remember to keep track of all 3 books and put them back into the book bag EACH NIGHT after reading so we will have them here for reading/strategy groups. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Have fun and happy reading!!

Week 6 - September 25-29
September has been a month full of rules, routines, procedures and learning about our new friends and we are now ready to really get rolling! I have completed almost all letter/sound assessments and will begin reading assessments toward the end of the week (these are baseline assessments, just to see where we all are). I will be sharing all results with you during our Fall Conference.
Important Dates and Reminders:
Tuesday, September 26 - No Homework/Early Release at 12:45 (lunch will be served)
Thursday, October 5 – Family Picnic, 5:30 pm. Kindergartners wear RED.
Reading Assignments:
Beginning today, your child will bring home a “real” book in addition to the small foldable one. You will notice that the book your child brings home might be too easy, too hard or “just right.” Again, I have not done any formal evaluation or assessment yet…we are just getting into a routine of taking books home, practicing reading to someone and bringing them back the next day. If the book is too hard, just read it to them or with them – NO STRESS!! Enjoy your reader or emerging reader and encourage and praise their efforts. We will bring home one book for a while and will work up to 3-4 per night. Please help them to remember to bring back the book the next day. This is going to be very helpful with responsibility and the care of our books. THANKS!
Coins for Cleanup update - Thank you so much for sending in change for the Hurricane Harvey Fundraiser. With your help Bridge Point was able to raise $2,518.80! Great job everyone!

Week 5 - September 18-22
Wow! Where does the time go? We are beginning our 5th week of school and are already more than halfway through the first quarter! The kids are doing well and have adjusted so well to our kindergarten routines! We have such a sweet, bright group! I have almost completed individual letter naming/letter sound assessments and am hoping to also complete individual reading assessments in the next couple of weeks.
Weekly Reading Assignments – Thank you all so much for helping your child remember to bring his or her reading assignment log back each day! Beginning next week, your child will also bring home a “real” book in addition to the small foldable one. You will notice that the book your child brings home might be too easy, too hard or it might be just right. Again, I have not done any formal evaluation or assessment yet…we will start by just getting into a routine of taking books home, practicing reading to someone and bringing them back the next day. If the book is too hard, just read it to them or with them – NO STRESS!! Enjoy your reader or emerging reader and encourage and praise their efforts. Please help them to remember to bring back the book the next day. This is going to be very helpful with responsibility and the care of our books. THANKS!

It is also helpful if they practice using them at home before bringing them to school. We will use headphones almost daily, especially during FIT time. They will be returned at the end of the year. Thank you!

Week 2 - August 28-September 1
Week 2 is off to a crazy, but great start! We had a busy, busy week last week, so hopefully you had a relaxing and restful weekend to recharge. We will definitely have earned our 3-day weekend this coming weekend!
I am so proud of our sweet class. They are quick learners and are already settling right in. The beginning of the year is tough because so much time is spent on rules, routines and procedures. On top of that they are switching teachers throughout the day and hearing a lot of new words and directions in Spanish. I couldn't be more proud of how they are adjusting. We are just learning the ropes and will continue to do so for a while. I have learned from experience that if we spend time really teaching expectations from the beginning, as well as how to problem solve, it will pay off for the rest of the year and we will be able to cover more ground (and have MORE FUN!). Hang with us....academics will come. We'll get there!
Important Reminders:
-Please remember to send the PINK Permanent Transportation Form back to school with your child as soon as possible if you haven’t already. Thanks!
Weekly Reading Assignments - We are jumping right in with books in our hands! Each Monday your child will bring home a small decodable reader (this week is I Am) as well as the Family Times pamphlet, which includes suggested activities for each day of the week. We read the book together in class every Monday, so your child is familiar with it. Reading the booklet every day helps build fluency and sight word recognition. You can send it back daily in the folder or leave it at home (they will keep this one). The Family Times activities are always optional, but definitely help reinforce the concepts we are working on in class. Please listen to your child read, then sign the hw sheet and return it to the folder. This week we are getting in the habit of reading each night and returning our hw sheet with signature. Thank you for helping us be responsible.
Here’s what we are up to in Room 110 this week:
-Lucky Duck of the Day (getting to know our new friends while learning about syllables, consonants/vowels, breaking words into parts, etc)
-Letter review – Ii, Nn, Mm, Cc, Oo
-story element – main character
-High frequency words – I, am
-Writing and drawing in our Doodles and Drawing books
-visiting the library for the first time on Thursday
Other:

Week 1 - August 21-25
Here we go! Welcome to a new (for all of us!) and exciting year in Kindergarten. We have been waiting for you!
It was so nice meeting you at Back to School Night and Bobcat Welcome and we are looking forward to a fabulous year together. Check here weekly for classroom updates and important information. We understand there are quite a few questions about the structure of our day in the Futuro program and we will do our best to answer each of them.
A few important things to know as we get started:
Mrs. King will teach Reading/Language Arts in English. Mr. Bitner will teach Math, Science and Social Studies in Spanish. Students should expect to spend half of their day in each language (students will ALWAYS have Morning Assembly, recess, lunch and specials with their homeroom teacher). Teachers will switch classes to ensure that students receive equitable content instruction.
On Monday your child will bring home a BLUE schedule for the first quarter in his/her daily folder. This will let you know when your child will be in English/Spanish each week, so you can chat about it at home to help ease any transition anxiety. We feel this schedule allows for peak learning times in both languages.
Learning a Language
In addition to learning language through curriculum, we will enrich our language acquisition through:
What to expect
Learning a new language can be scary! It takes time and practice. Your child should be able to begin using their Spanish consistently within the first 6 weeks. To be as consistent as possible, and help your child transition between classes, we will have aligned policies and procedures.
This is going to be a great experience. Please know that there will be a few growing pains as we make the BPE Futuro program the best it can be. We look forward to a successful year with each and every new kindergartner. We appreciate your support and grace as we embark on this journey together.
